Read customer reviews for real-world performance and run-time reports.Look for features you will use don't pay extra for bells and whistles or self-propulsion if you don't need them. The cheapest electric tools are rarely worth buying. Consider mid-level or better brands only.I have a few recommendations for homeowners looking at electric lawn mowers: On my yard, it has run out of power only once, when the grass was unusually long and I had to mow a couple of sections twice (due to the grass length, not the mower's performance). The 40-volt battery on the electric is rated for 6.0 amp-hours, which translates to about 45 minutes of mowing time under normal conditions. The electric also doesn't end up blowing white smoke like the gas one did when the lawn got too bumpy. The electric mower cuts the grass just as well as the gas mower, and because the electric weighs about half as much, it's easier to push around (both mowers are non-self-propelled). With my gas mower, I had to change my clothes every time after mowing because they stunk from exhaust. Best of all, the electric requires zero seasonal maintenance and has zero emissions (I get wind-generated power from my electric utility). I much prefer the electric mower because it's lighter, quieter, easier to store (it rotates to a vertical position), and easier to start (no more pull-starts or risk of flooding the engine) than the old gas mower. I'd been mowing it with a standard gas push mower for 12 years before switching to electric. It's pretty hard on mowers (both the machine and myself) because it's lumpy and bumpy and has a large berm with a slope of about 40 degrees. I have a large-ish suburban lawn of about 7,500 square feet (0.17 acre). Phil Schmidt, Hunker's Home Improvement Expert, explains why he's happy he switched from a gas to an electric lawn mower: No gasoline fumes: You can store electric equipment in your garage without fear of your house smelling like gasoline.Electric lawn mowers are significantly quieter than gas mowers. Many municipalities are banning leaf blowers or considering it because of noise. Noise reduction: Noise pollution awareness has grown in recent years.Studies have shown that 10 minutes of using a leaf blower emits more pollution than driving a car over a hundred miles. Emissions reduction: Small engine equipment produces enormous amounts of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons.Anyone who has tried to start a gasoline small engine that has not been used all winter can understand the frustration. Easy to start and operate: One of the most beautiful aspects of an electric piece of equipment is that you can simply pull the trigger and it operates.More involved repairs, such as carburetor replacement, can easily cost 25 to 50 percent of a replacement machine. Preventative maintenanceĬonsists of simple tasks, such as changing spark plugs and air filters, but it costs money and takes time. Less maintenance: All gas engines need maintenance.Being able to charge a battery instead of going to the gas station is a big selling point. It also has a short shelf life, which causes failure of carburetors and other fuel components in traditional gas equipment. With the addition of two-cycle oil (required on some mowers), a gallon of mix-oil gas easily costs $5 to $7 or more. Ease: There is no gas to store and a significant reduction in maintenance.
